Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), commonly known as MIG/MAG welding, is a continuous wire-fed arc welding process carried out under a shielding gas atmosphere. Depending on whether the shielding gas is chemically reactive, it is classified as MIG (inert gas, for non-ferrous metals) or MAG (active gas, for deep penetration in steels).
When the trigger on the welding torch is pressed, the bare welding wire advances at a constant speed; the electric arc formed as the wire tip contacts the workpiece melts both the wire and the base metal.
