Key Considerations for Stainless Steel Laser Cutting

Teknik Rehber 26.07.2026

Stainless steel is one of the most preferred materials in industry due to its durability and aesthetic appearance. However, laser cutting requires attention to several specific points.

Risk of Heat Deformation

Because stainless steel conducts heat slowly, local heating can occur in the cutting zone. Incorrect parameter selection can cause warping or discoloration (oxidation) in thin materials. Correct power and speed settings minimize this risk.

Cutting Gas Selection

Nitrogen gas is generally preferred for cutting stainless steel. Nitrogen prevents oxidation at the cut edge, providing a bright and clean surface. Using oxygen offers faster cutting but can cause discoloration at the edges.

Edge Quality

A quality stainless steel cut should be ready for assembly without additional processing (sanding, polishing). Edge roughness is controlled by properly balancing laser power, speed, and focus distance.

Approach by Thickness

Thin stainless sheets (0.5-3 mm) can be cut cleanly at high speed, while thick stainless steel (10 mm and above) requires high-power fiber laser machines and slower cutting speed.

Application Areas

Stainless steel laser cutting is widely used in food equipment, architectural applications, medical device parts, and the automotive industry. Most of these sectors demand flawless edge quality due to hygiene and aesthetic standards.

Conclusion

When the right gas selection, parameter settings, and machine capacity come together in stainless steel laser cutting, high-quality results are achieved both aesthetically and functionally.
