Ways to Reduce Scrap Rate in Laser Cutting

Teknik Rehber 05.08.2026

Scrap rate is a significant factor that directly affects laser cutting costs. Reducing material waste is valuable both in terms of cost and sustainability.

Using Nesting Software

Nesting is the process of arranging parts on a sheet in the most efficient way. Advanced nesting software positions different parts as close to each other as possible, minimizing wasted space and significantly reducing scrap rate.

Correct Selection of Standard Sheet Sizes

The ordered sheet size should be chosen to match the dimensions of the parts to be produced. Using an unnecessarily large sheet can leave large unusable remnants after cutting.

Optimizing Part Geometry

Designing interlocking parts during the design stage allows less space to be left on the sheet. Early communication between the designer and manufacturer on this matter is more effective than later optimization.

Making Use of Remnant Material

Remnant pieces left over after cutting can be stored for small-scale jobs or recycled. While this does not directly reduce the scrap rate, it offsets the cost loss.

Cutting Order and Path Optimization

The path followed by the laser head can be shortened by using shared cutting lines. This saves both time and energy, indirectly lowering costs.

Conclusion

Reducing scrap rate is not possible with a single measure; it requires the combination of the right software, smart design, and experienced production planning. This increases both your cost efficiency and the manufacturer's productivity.
